I trained in Medicine in Glasgow and undertook Gastroenterology training in Glasgow, Edinburgh and South Carolina, USA. I have been a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Western General Hospital and subsequently the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh since 1996. I have a broad range of clinical interests including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), therapeutic endoscopy, Barrett's oesophagus and the endoscopic diagnosis and management of GI cancers, including advanced endoscopic imaging techniques. I am active in teaching and training in endoscopy and colonoscopy and, as a part-time Senior Lecturer at Edinburgh University, I am involved in studies of cancer risk in Barrett's oesophagus.
I am a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). I am co-editor of Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine and a textbook of endoscopy - Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in Practice. I have published over 65 clinical or research papers, editorials and articles in peer-reviewed journals. I am currently a member of the Endoscopy committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology and secretary of the Scottish Society of Gastroenterology. In recent years I have held a number of administrative positions including NHS-HIS Clinical Advisor for Endoscopy, Bowel Screening Program Governance committee and Joint Advisory Group (JAG) Quality Assurance (Units) committee member and Chairman, UK Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) Users Group.
